Rijeka Gateway picks emissions free crane operation with Liebherr
Liebherr Container Cranes will supply 15 electric rubber tyre gantry cranes and two rail mounted gantry cranes to Rijeka Gateway, allowing for emissions-free crane operations at the terminal.
The all-electric cranes will be remotely operated from dedicated Liebherr Remote Operator Stations (ROS), reducing the risks of injury and accidents by moving operators from the crane to an office setting. The move also lays the foundation for a move to full automation of the cranes in the future.
In November 2021, APM Terminals and Enna Logic agreed to design and construct Rijeka Gateway as a state of the art terminal on the North Adriactic Coast of Croatia. The first phase of the project is due for completion in the second quarter of 2025.
The Liebherr deal will supply 17 cranes with zero emissions in operation. The cranes have no hydraulics, use Liebherr’s lithium-ion battery solution Liebherr Liduro Power Port for traveling between stacks, and are powered by a drive-in, auto-connect electric busbar.
Supporting productivity, Liebherr said the cranes will come with its no-sway reeving, and simultaneous motion of all drives as standard.
Declan O’Sullivan Liebherr’s General Manager – Sales, said: “Sustainability is at the core of our solution. We understand the importance of environmentally responsible practices, and we strive to be a leader in sustainable supply chains.”
“By leveraging remote operations and advanced equipment, the terminal is establishing new benchmarks for operational efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility in the Adriatic region.”
