The vessel is en route to the North Sea, where Olsen will use it alongside Lamprell-built sister ship, Brave Tern, delivered just five months ago.

The two jack-up installation vessels were designed by Netherlands-based Gusto MSC, and are self-elevating and self-propelled. The vessels have 800 tonne “wrap around the leg” offshore-rated cranes also designed by Gusto MSC, as well as robust, continuous type jacking systems. In addition, each vessel has DP2-class type dynamic positioning system and are fitted with Voith Schneider propulsion systems, enabling superior and secure positioning capabilities.

The vessels have accommodation for up to 80 persons in 56 cabins, as well as a heli-deck to facilitate transfers during offshore wind farm installations.

“The project has been highly complex with significant challenges which we have now overcome. Given these challenges, it is with some pride that we can now see this vessel completed. [The vessels] are the largest two ever built by Lamprell and the new designs are considered prototype in nature,” said Peter Whitbread, ceo of Lamprell, At the vessel launch in Jebel Ali, UAE.

Bold Tern is 132 m in length, with a mid-hull breadth of 39 m. It has a transit speed of 12 knots, DP2; and a water depth range between 7.5 to 45 m. The crane can handle 800 tonnes at 24 metres outreach; 102m over deck. Its typical payload is 5,300 tonnes.
