U-Ming to install Anemoi rotor sails on VLOC
Four sails to bring 10-12% fuel savings on 325,000 dwt ore carrier calling China, Brazil, South Africa, and Australia.
U-Ming Marine announced it has appointed the UK’s Anemoi to bring wind assisted ship propulsion to one of teh Taiwanese owner's 325,000 dwt very large ore carriers (VLOC).
Four of Anemoi’s rotor sails will be installed on the ship by the end of 2025, bringing expected fuel savings of 10-12%, the companies said. The vessel lined up for the wind boost works routes between China and Brazil, South Africa, and Australia.
The four sails will each be 35 m tall, 5 m in diameter, and come with Anemoi’s folding system to enable flexibility in cargo operations.
Anemoi rotor sails have been retrofitted on vessels including 82,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier TR Lady, which had four rotor sails installed on Anemoi’s rail deployment systems to allow movement of the sails along and across the deck. Four folding rotor sails were installed on Berge Bulk’s Berge Neblina, a 388,000 dwt Valemax ore carrier, earlier this year.
Mr CK Ong, president of U-Ming said: "These state-of-the-art rotor sails will play a key role in our decarbonisation strategy and will complement our portfolio of existing emission reducing technologies, including a fleet of LNG dual-fuel vessels.
“In addition, we will continue to research other emission lowering pathways such as carbon capture systems and retrofitting conventional vessels to methanol dual-fuel.”
Claes Horndahl, commercial director at Anemoi, said: “With significant fuel and emissions savings forecasted, this latest investment will further enhance the international recognition of U-Ming’s steadfast dedication to sustainability and Anemoi’s position as a leading provider of critical vessel decarbonisation technology.”
