DFDS orders two ro-ro vessels at Jinling Shipyard
Denmark’s DFDS has ordered two ro-ro vessels with an option for four more at China’s Jinling Shipyard.

The two newbuildings are scheduled to be delivered in the beginning of 2019. The two ships cost a total of DKK1bn ($150.8m).

The ro-ro vessels are planned to be deployed in DFDS’ route network on the North Sea.

“The order is part of DFDS’ ongoing fleet renewal to accommodate the growth of our freight customers, increase operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact,” DFDS said.

The new ships, designed to each carry 6,700 lane metres of freight equivalent to around 450 trailers, will help to decrease unit costs as well as the environmental impact per transported unit.

DFDS said the newbuildings represent a new generation of environmentally-friendly ro-ro ships as they comply with the latest environmental rules of the new IMO standard EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index). The ships are equipped with scrubbers, ballast water treatment systems and a number of energy efficiency initiatives.

Jinling Shipyard had earlier clinched another deal to build a pair of 12,000-dwt ro-ro vessels for logistics provider Toll Group.
