Germany plans anti-piracy meeting on heels of latest hijack

Hamburg: The German Ministry of Defence is in the process of scheduling a meeting  with shipping industry officials and the government  in order to address the growing number of German vessels that have been attacked by Somali pirates.

The meeting, which is expected take place in late January, comes as a 5,200-ton German vessel carrying petroleum products was hijacked on Tuesday while enroute to Greece from the UAE. The vessel is confirmed to have a crew of eight comprising primarily of Filipino seafarers.

VDR, the German Shipowner's Association, is reported to have called for additional protection of German ships in the face of the multiple attacks.  [30/12/10]
