KRS to establish regional headquarter in Singapore

Singapore: The senior vice president of Korean Register of Shipping, Kim Jong-won, has announced the class society's intention to establish its third Regional Head Quarter in Singapore, supplementing its existing regional headquarters in Greece and China.

The announcement was made at KR's 2nd Singapore Technical Seminar on 28 Jul 2009 at Pan Pacific that was attended by 91 participants from various sectors of the maritime community. The society also held another round of lectures at Sembawang Shipyard  the next day for about 80 staff members and clients of the shipyard.

KR became a full member of International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) in 1985.  It established its Singapore Office in 1981 and was recognized by the Singapore government in 1997 as an 'recognised organisation' (RO) to survey Singapore ships and issue statutory certificates on behalf of the government.

Currently KR is recognised by 50 flag administrations. It has 2374 ships under its class, aggregating 37m gt. Among the ships classed by KR, 25 % are owned by non-Korean owners.  [31/07/09]
