Tokyo: NYK has taken delivery of its first new 300,000dwt-class of ore carrier built by Universal Shipbuilding. The vessel, Oita Maru, is not only the first of this size ordered by the company but also the first NYK bulk carrier to be equipped with an electronically controlled engine for optimal combustion efficiency and minimal emissions. Vessel dimensions are 327 metres in length overall, 55 metres in breadth, 21.4 metres in draught, 152,000gt and 297,000dwt.
The ship will be chartered to Nippon Steel Corporation as part of the subsequent eight years of a contract for the carriage of 1.2 million tons of iron ore each year mainly from Brazil. Attending the naming and delivery ceremony were Kosei Shindo, representative director and executive vice president of Nippon Steel; Yasumi Kudo, president of NYK; and Hidenori Hono, representative director and senior managing corporate officer of NYK.
