Thai-listed feeder and intra-Asian container carrier Regional Container Lines (RCL) is making a major step up in ship size acquiring a pair of 12,000 teu resale vessels.

RCL is splashing out $230m on the 12,000 teu capacity vessels which it is acquiring from Panama incorporated Giant Line. Payment for the vessels is to be made in four installments with delivery Q4 2022 and Q1 2023.

The new 12,000 teu ships represent a major increase in size for RCL which on its website lists it fleet as varying between 388 teu and 6,640 teu in capacity.

A stock exchanged announcement merely commented that the Board of Directors of RCL believed the transaction was “necessary and reasonable”.
