Speaking at the opening of Singapore Maritime Week 2022, S Iswaran, Singapore Minister of Transport, said, “Looking ahead decarbonisation is a major challenge for the maritime industry. We must act – today and together. As a global maritime hub, Singapore seeks to contribute to this critical effort in a flexible and inclusive way.”
“I am pleased to announce Singapore will join the Clydebank Declaration for Green Shipping Corridors, together with 22 signatory states.”
The Clydebank Declaration aims to establish set zero-emission maritime routes between two or more ports. At the launch the signatories said the plan was to establish six such corridors by the middle of the decade.
The Minister said that Singapore had also been a staunch support and advocate of IMO-led initiatives such as the NextGEN web portal.
Minister Iswaran also stressed the role of the industry has to play in decarbonisation and that, “Efforts at the company level are just as important as government-led efforts." He cited the Castor initiative, Itochu Corp, Sumitomo to develop alternative-fuelled ships as such industry initiatives.
“Singapore welcomes such industry-led collaborations to leverage our maritime hub ecosystem to pilot and deploy green solutions,” the Minister said.
