Swire Shipping names last of eight multipurpose vessels
Swire Shipping hosted about 100 guests in Singapore’s Jurong Port on Thursday as the company held a traditional ship naming ceremony for Szechuen, a 31,000 dwt multipurpose vessel.

The vessel, with 2,114 teu container capacity and 120 tonnes lifting capacity, is the last of Swire Shipping’s eight brand new S-Class vessel for service deployments in Asia-Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Pacific Islands, and Australia-West Coast North America.

Naming of the vessel by Lady Sponsor

Tan Beng Tee, assistant chief executive (development) of Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), was the guest of honour and Lady Sponsor at the naming ceremony.

All of the eight S-Class vessels are Singapore-flagged and were built at China’s Zhejiang Ouhua Shipbuilding Co.

These multipurpose vessels are capable of handling a wide range of cargoes including dry bulk, breakbulk, heavylift, project cargo, and reefer containers.

“These ships are being designed to achieve high efficiency for their type, ensuring the low fuel consumption,” said Tim Blackburn, managing director of The China Navigation Company. Swire Shipping is the brand name for all liner shipping services operated by The China Navigation Company.

“The China Navigation Company has also invested in four 22,000 dwt multipurpose vessels, four 1,700 teu eco-containerships, and 24 modern fuel efficient handysize bulk carriers, for delivery over the next 24 months, representing a total investment of over $1bn,” Blackburn said.
