The Chilean giant state mining company Codelco, Japan’s NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers (NBP), Oshima Shipbuilding and Sumitomo Corporation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) design and build an ammonia dual-fuel handymax bulker.

The agreement covers the study, design and build the world’s first ammonia dual-fuelled handymax bulk carrier and would be capable of reducing CO2 emissions to zero.

The announcement in Tokyo, came just a year after Codelco and NBP signed a MoU to jointly develop copper shipping options with lower CO2 emissions.

The companies explained that this is the first of a fleet of between 10 and 15 vessels that NBP will operate in the movement from Chile to the Far East, dedicated exclusively to the transport of copper.

"What was an ambitious idea less than a year ago is today a reality. As Codelco we have the duty to lead a more sustainable mining industry, and this is a great sign to make Chile the first country in the world to demonstrate that energy transition and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is possible," said Maximo Pacheco, Chairman of Codelco's Board of Directors.

"Based on the MoU signed with Codelco on 24 November 2022, NBP has been studying the decarbonisation of copper product shipping, with the co-operation of all stakeholders. After a year of deliberations, NBP and Codelco have concluded on a new memorandum with Oshima Shipbuilding for the research, design, and construction of a Handymax bulk carrier, equipped with a dual-fuel engine that will use ammonia as the main fuel. This is a first concrete step towards a decarbonised partnership for Codelco and NBP. Our company will continue to contribute to global decarbonisation together with its customers," NBP President Masashi Suda said.
