Japanese marine equipment manufacturer Yanmar Power Technology has launched a commercial, zero emission hydrogen fuel cell for ships.

Yanmar said it would take orders from 1 August for the 300kW customisable maritime hydrogen fuel cell.

The unit weighs 3,000 kg and is fuelled by hydrogen according to Yanmar is zero emissions producing no CO2, NOx, SOx, or PM. The system is equipped with maritime hydrogen fuel cell module which has Approval in Principle (AiP) from ClassNK, while the company has applied for an AiP for the system itself.

The system would be built to order, and the company said it would propose installation on passenger vessels, workboats and coastal cargo vessels where hydrogen fuel was relatively accessible.

“Leveraging their expertise and experience in the marine engine business, Yanmar aims to provide total solutions for decarbonisation and digitalisation of ships with comprehensive designs covering the entire powertrain of fuel cell ships, encompassing power storage, power management, propulsion, hydrogen storage systems and more,” the company said.

Operation of the system has been verified on a test boat with the operation of the hydrogen fuel cell and control of an electric powertrain during sea trials.

It is also verifying shore-to-ship 70MPa high-pressure hydrogen refueling technology using a mobile hydrogen station.
