Crowley spends $350m on two con-ro vessels
US-based Crowley Maritime Corporation is spending $350m to build two LNG-powered container roll-on/roll-off (con-ro) vessels at VT Halter Marine Inc, the US shipyard of ST Engineering.

Construction of the vessels, named El Coquí and Taíno, will start in the first half of 2014 with deliveries in mid and late 2017.

The vessels will replace the company's towed triple-deck barge fleet, which has served the US to Puerto Rico trade since the early 1970s.

“Our investment in these new ships – the first of their kind in the world – is significant on so many fronts,” said Tom Crowley, Crowley's chairman and ceo. “We named them the Commitment Class of ships because they represent our commitment to our customers and the people of Puerto Rico whom we will continue to serve for years to come with the superior service they expect from Crowley.”

The Wartsila designed con-ro vessels come with cargo capacity of approximately 2,400 teu with additional space for nearly 400 vehicles. The main propulsion and auxiliary engines will be fueled with LNG.

“Coupled with the LNG fuel, customers can take satisfaction in that they are getting faster, more reliable service, while reducing the amount of CO2 emissions attributable to each container by approximately 38%,” said John Hourihan, senior vice president and general manager of Puerto Rico and Caribbean services at Crowley.
