The call for public input aims to gather insight from across the industry with a view to identifying and alleviating any unnecessary, disproportionate or obsolete administrative requirements relating to complying with IMO rules.
IMO secretary general Koji Sekimizu said, "There has long been a feeling in the industry that there is too much wasted paperwork. This is the start of our efforts to tackle that problem. I would urge as many people as possible to take part in this consultation, as only with a strong set of data can we meaningfully identify where changes may be necessary."
Open to all, the consultation will particularly targets maritime stakeholders such as governments, manufacturers and suppliers, owners and companies, seafarers, port authorities, shipbuilders, shippers and recognised organisations.
Once the public consultation draws to an end on 31 October 2013, a steering group will analyse the responses and identify administrative requirements identified as burdens before making recommendations to the IMO Council on how to address those burdens.
