Satcoms giant Inmarsat acquires Globe Wireless

Satcoms giant Inmarsat acquires Globe Wireless
Inmarsat plans to acquire Florida-based Globe Wireless, a provider of value-added satcoms services.

With the acquisition of Globe Wireless, which has an customer base spanning 6,000 ships and generated $91m in the 12 months ended June 30, 2013, Inmarsat aims to bring Globe Wireless’ services to its own customer base, as well as recruiting skilled engineers to enable a quicker roll-out of its Xpresslink and Global Xpress services.

"Adding the Globe Wireless team will immediately bring material benefits, enabling a faster roll-out of XL, FleetBroadband and transition to GX in due course,” said Rupert Pearce, Inmarsat ceo. “We are also acquiring a skilled and established solutions development team that has been responsible for a market-leading portfolio of value added services.”

The move follows the successful launch of Inmarsat’s first Global Xpress satellite, equipped with Ka-Band capability, on 8 December.

Frank Coles, Inmarsat president and previous ceo of Globe Wireless, said: “Globe Wireless has created a suite of products and value added services that are unequalled in the market today, and by combining this with our FB and GX services, we believe we can further enhance our position as the leading provider of services to the maritime customer. We will be making these capabilities immediately available to our channel partners via our global network and wholesale support environment, strongly enhancing the Inmarsat Maritime proposition into the market.

“Our purchase of Globe Wireless also removes the need for partners to invest the time, funds and other resources in duplicative R&D”.
