Barge in place to pump oil off Shen Neng 1

Brisbane: A bunker barge is in place at the Great Barrier Reef to pump oil off the stricken bulker Shen Neng 1. Maritime Safety Queensland said the Larcom bunker barge had arrived at the scene of the casualty at 0830 hrs. Anti-pollution measures are the priority before any fuel oil can be transferred off the ship. "We need all our checks in place before pumping the oil off the ship. We are laying the booms transported by the two vessels late last night but it's a difficult and complex task," said Peter Quirk, general manager of Maritime Safety Queensland. "The safety of the crews on the response vessels is of the highest priority," he added. The weather conditions were seen a favourable for the salvage operation. [08/04/10]
