Chennai port to get new container terminal

Chennai: The Chennai Port Trust Authority (CPTA) Wednesday announced that the central government has "in principle" approved a new container terminal with a capacity to handle five million teu.

The port has received clearance from the union environment ministry for the Rs.31.1-billion project under a build, operate and transfer programme, said K. Suresh, CPTA, in a statement released here.

An elevated expressway will be built at a cost of Rs.14.68 billion to connect Chennai port to the national highway to Bangalore and the industrial hub of Sriperumbudur, he added.  [03/04/08]
