Kuwait City: Chinese state company China Harbor Engineering Company is heading a consortium to develop the new Boubyan Island city and port in the north east of Kuwait.
In a contract just signed by Kuwaiti Minister of Public Works Moussa Al-Sarraf, the first $400m phase of the three-stage project will involve a 35 kilometre three-lane bridge linking Boubyan Island, the largest in Kuwait, with the mainland. A new railway will also be built during the 42-month phase one. Subsequent phases will involve dredging and land reclamation and development of the new port which, Kuwaiti sources say, is badly needed to handle soaring volumes of sea traffic.
China's Deputy Minister for Transportation Feng Zhenglin attended the signing ceremony and expressed his wishs that China would play a continuing role in Kuwaiti construction projects and ongoing economic development. Two other companies, Shahin Al Gahanim and Gulf Dredging, are involved in the consortium.
