CSCL colossus calls Europe

Felixstowe: Hutchison-owned Port of Felixstowe has welcomed what is officially the world's largest containership, the 9,560teu CSCL Xin Los Angeles. The vessel, which has a gross tonnage of 106,700, a length of 337 metres and a breadth of 45.6 metres, is making her maiden voyage on China Shipping Container Lines' Asia/Europe Express 1 (AEX1) service, before switching to the new AEX7 service with CMA CGM in late August. Chris Lewis, ceo of Hutchison Ports (UK), points out that this is the second time this year that Felixstowe has been able to welcome the world's largest ship, 'testimony to the demand for goods from the Far East for the Western markets' and reason for local expansion plans at Bathside Bay and Felixstowe South.  [28/07/06]
