Brisbane: Faulty lashing equipment used to secure containers to the deck of the Pacific Adventurer was responsible for one of Queensland's worst ever environmental disasters, a court was told.
Filipino man Bernadino Gonzales Santos appeared in the Magistrates Court in Brisbane charged with disposal of oil in coastal waters and failing to notify authorities of a reportable incident.
Captain Santos, 47, was skipper of the Pacific Adventurer in March 2009 when about 270 tonnes of oil spilled into the ocean after containers pierced the hull.?Shipping companies Swire Shipping, Swire Navigation, China Navigation, and Bluewind Shipping are also charged with disposal of oil in coastal waters.?Captain Santos faces a maximum fine of $500,000 while the separate companies face a fine of up to $10 million each.  [05/07/10]
