Hamburg: Leading South Korean shipping liner Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has launched a container train connection - the 'Poland Express', between Hamburg and Mlawa in Poland. This weekly rail service is developed to work in conjunction with HMM's Asia-Europe express 'AEX' service, supplementing the existing range of transportation to and from Poland.
In a statement to the press, HMM said, "This new container train service is primarily used by the shipping company clients of LG Electronics and Pantos Logistics, who transport particularly time critical consignments using the container train."
At present, approximately 82,000teu is transported by train between the Port of Hamburg and Poland by block train connections supplied by Polzug Intermodal, which operates four wholly-owned Polish terminals and three additional jointly managed terminals. Container traffic between Poland and the Port of Hamburg saw an 18% surge last year to 267,666teu.
For the first six months of 2007, transhipment traffic at Hamburg destined for Poland has risen 24% to 149,904teu. [19/09/07]
