Hong Kong shuts down as typhoon slams home

Hong Kong: Hong Kong braced for its first proper typhoon hit of the season today. Victoria Harbour was a mad scramble as ships of all shapes and sizes scurried to shelters as the T8 signal was raised at 2.45pm local time. Typhoon Pabuk circled over Macau before heading back to hit Hong Kong.

Among initial casualties was a barge called Everbest (pictured), which broke from its moorings and ran aground on the beach adjacent to the power station on  the outlying island of Lamma.  A Sea King helicopter was dispatched by the Marine Department to assess the potential damage as the vessel is sitting on boulders on a relatively pristine beach. No fuel leaks have been spotted thus far.

By 5.15pm the storm had passed through the Special Administrative Region and was heading northeast onto the mainland. [10/08/07]
