Paris: Latest statistics from French box specialists AXS-Alphaliner make for alarming reading. The world's containership owners have ordered as many ships in the first half of this year as they did throughout 2006.
In total 284 boxships, equivalent to 1.52m slots, were ordered in the first half of this year compared to 1.58m slots for the whole of last year. Remarkably two thirds of the ships ordered this half were ordered in May and June alone.
The boxship orderbook now stands at a record 5.45m teu for 1,351 ships, which represents 53% of the extant fleet. Capacity growth this year is expected to be 15%, and 14% next year against 10-12% growth in cargo demand.
