Indian feeder operators slap on surcharge

Indian feeder operators slap on surcharge

Mumbai: Member lines of the Singapore registered Calcutta Feeder Operators (Calfo) have announced a $150per teu trade surcharge on shipments between Singapore/Malaysia and Kolkata/Haldia, reports the Hindu Business Line. The increase has been justified as a result of severe congestion at the mouth of the river Hooghly used by feeder vessels to access Haldia and Koltaka. The situation is expected to worsen next month when feeder tonnage capacity will be reduced as a result of the annual drop in the river's water levels, bringing revenues to unacceptable lows.

The additional charges will come into play on October 22 for containers loaded at Singapore and Malaysia and on November 1 for containers loaded at the Indian ports.

Calfo members include Advance Container Line, Bengal Tiger Line, Megastar Shipping, Orient Express Line, PACC Container Line, Samudera Shipping Line and Sea Consortium.  [10/10/07]
