Malaysia aims for 2% global shipbuilding share by 2020
Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia is aiming to raise its share of the global shipbuilding industry to 2% by 2020 from 1% in 2010, Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia (AMIM) president and chairman Ahmad Ramli Mohd Nor was quoted as saying.

Shipbuilding and ship repair in Malaysia contributed about MYR7bn ($2.3bn) in revenue in 2011. “We are being realistic in not aiming to compete for the construction of big container vessels. We want to focus on the niche market of small-and medium sized vessels of up to 30,000 tonnes,” he was quoted as saying.

Ahmad Ramli identified potential markets for Malaysia's maritime industry exports as the Middle East, Africa and to some extent Europe, adding that inroads have already been made in these markets.
