Mercantile Shipping to boost fleet

Colombo: Sri Lanka's Mercantile Shipping Companyhas revealed that it is to take delivery of its second newly built cargo ship in November, writes LBO. The first of a pair of new cargo ships built by a Dutch yard and named Mercs Uva was delivered last month and has already been charted out, the firm said in a statement.

Mercs Uva is the first newly built vessels acquired by a Sri Lankan ship owner as previous vessels had all been second-hand, it said.

The new multi-purpose cargo vessel will fly the Sri Lankan flag and be managed by Mercantile Shipping.

Her crew management will be handled by group firm Mercantile Marine Management the statement said. It added that Mercantile Emerald Shipping, a subsidiary of Mercantile Shipping Company, recently took charge of MV Mercs Uva at the port of Delfzijl in The Netherlands.

The project was made possible partly through a government-to-government grant from The Netherlands which was negotiated by Mercantile Shipping some six years ago.  [26/08/09]
