Non-inclusion in EU Emmissions Trading Scheme good for shipping: Aegean
The recent move by the European Union (EU) to not include shipping the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is good for the industry according to Aegean Shipmanagement.

The EU has been expected to included shipping in the ETS over frustrations at how long it has taken the IMO to act on reducing CO2 emissions by shipping. Speaking at Mare Forum Hong Kong Apostolos Poulovassilis, ceo of Aegean Shipmanagement, said, “I think at the moment the EU is willing to wait for the IMO to decide its strategy.

“This is good news for shipping as we don't have any regional regulation. At the moment its in the hands of the IMO”

Poulovassilis believes it will be close to the middle of the century, three years before 2050, when de-carbonisation has a real effect on shipping. “What is inevitable is we will have very different ships,” he said.

At this stage there will be both different fuels and different cargoes with no coal or fossil fuels.
