Jakarta: Indonesian state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina has signed a $29.1m contract with local shipyard PT DOC & Perkapalan Surabaya for the construction of two 6,500 LTDW (Long Ton Dead Weight) oil tankers. The vessels, which will be used for fuel distribution, are due for delivery in the first and third quarters of 2011 respectively.
The tankers will use environmentally friendly technologies among which are ballast tank water management, zat anti fouling and engines that fulfil NOx international criteria.
Pertamina currently operates a fleet of 130 vessels used for fuel distribution, of which 80% are chartered in. The company also intends to order five 30,000 LTDW tankers from China's Zhejiang Chenge Shipbuilding in the near future.
In a statement on its website Pertamina said that as about "75% of domestic fuel is transported by tankers", it is eager to refresh its owned fleet by replacing vessels that are over 25 years in age. [20/02/08]
