Port Klang box volume grew 4.1% in 2012
Container traffic at Malaysia's Port Klang grew just 4.1% last year to 9.99m teus from 9.60m teu in 2011 due to the prolonged export slump. It however, expects to retain its ranking as the world's 13th busiest container port and aims to surpass the 10m teu mark this year, forecasting that it will handle 10.4m teus for 2013.

Transhipment traffic accounted for 6.30m teu, making up 63% of total container volume. Local export and import boxes made up the remaining 37% or 3.69m teu, according to Port Klang authorities.

Between the two operators at Port Klang, Westports was the leading terminal in 2012, with a 69% market share and handling 6.91m teu, while Northport handled just 3.08m teu. Westports international connections seem to have given it the edge, with the
Hutchison-connected terminal handling 4.96m transhipment boxes compared to Northport's 1.34m teu of transhipment cargo.
