Qingshan celebrates decade of work with Germanischer Lloyd

Wuhan: Ten years of close cooperation between Qingshan Shipyard and Germanischer Lloyd (GL) were marked by a special ceremony at the Yangtze river yard yesterday, attended by moré than 100 guests including local officials and Liu Xihan, president of yard owner the Chang Jiang Shipping Group.

The anniversary coincided with the contracting of a 60th vessel to be built under GL class at the yard, a 19,800dwt stainless steel chemical tanker. To date 27 of the ships have been delivered.

The German classification society says that has since 1996 it has overseen a variety of vessel types built by Qingshan including the 818teu, 502teu, 660teu and 1100teu container vessel series, 12,000dwt bulk cargo carrier series and 18,500dwt chemical products tanker series. Productivity at the yard, where there are currently 3,800 employees, has improved rapidly from delivery of two completed essels a year to more than eight in 2006.

Over 350 vessels with Germanischer Lloyd class are now on order at almost 50 shipyards in China. The class society employs a workforce of over 175 in the Greater China region at nine different stations ?" Shanghai, Dalian, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Jiangyin, Nanjing, Wuhan and the recently opened Ningbo, plus Kaohsiung - and two more will be added in coming months. [04/08/06]
