Seoul: Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) is to build a jv yard in Russia's Far East region with local firm United Shipbuilding Corporation (OSK). The yard, which will cost $1.5bn, will be completed by the end of 2011. It is located in Bolshoy Kamen in Russia's Primorye region and will produce gas tankers, ice-class vessels, drilling ships and floating liquefied natural gas plants, OSK said in a statement. Many Korean yards, notably STX, have courted Russian shipbuilders aware of Moscow's increasing demands for local owners to order locally. Earlier this month, during Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin's visit to Beijing, China's Yantai Raffles signed an MoU to build a jv yard near Vladivostok.
Separately, DSME said Tuesday it has received a US$460m order to build four very large bulk ships.
A client in Southeast Asia placed the order to build the four 400,000 dwt vessels, DSME said in a statement, without identifying the client. [27/10/09]
