Singapore TV to air life-at-sea drama

Singapore: In a bid to promote careers in the marine and offshore industry, Singapore shipping bodies have jointly commissioned a 21-episode television drama in Mandarin entitled 'Zui Gao Dian' ('The Peak'), which begins airing next week.

Shot on locations including a container ship, a rig, Jurong Port, Keppel FELS yard and the MPA's Integrated Simulation Centre, the serial is designed to showcase the diversity and dynamism of the marine and offshore sector, which already employs some 80,000 persons locally.

"With Asia's increased dominance in world shipping and Singapore's strategic location at the crossroad of global trade, we are well placed to grow further as one of the world's important maritime hubs,' says SS Teo, chairman of the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF). 'The drivers for growth in this industry are the talented and spirited locals who have the passion and determination to succeed."

Initiated and led by Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd, the main sponsors for the drama also include the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), SMF, Association of Singapore Marine Industries (ASMI) and ABS.

"Although the maritime sector has been doing well in recent years," comments MPA chief executive BG Tay Lim Heng, "there remains a lack of awareness among the young, and the public in general, in the exciting career opportunities in general."

Michael Chia, president of ASMI and executive director of Keppel FELS adds: "The serial will allow us to appeal to a wider target audience, giving them a greater understanding of the technological leadership, the high safety standards and global reputation that our industry has achieved."

The serial begins January 8 on Channel 8 at primetime 9:00pm.  [03/01/07]
