Stena exercises SHI Suezmax options

Seoul: Sweden's Stena Bulk AB is reported to haves exercised its option for two in-house designed 158,700 dwt Suezmax tankers from Samsung Heavy Industries. The vessels, with a length of 274 metres and a beam of 48 metres, were declarable as part of an original agreement for two Suezmaxes announced in January.

'The order is part of Stena Bulk's strategic investment in own high-class tonnage for the Stena Sonangol Suezmax Pool, which is now in its fifth successful year together with the state-owned Angolan oil company Sonangol,' the company has said at the agreement signing in January. 'The pool consists of around 15 tankers, which will be expanded to about 25 large tankers over a 3-year period.'

The vessels, which will be the largest tankers in Stena Bulk's fleet, are expected to be delivered by the yard by mid - 2012, following on from the first two that will be delivered by end 2011. The Stena Sphere has already placed significant and major orders with Samsung Shipyard, including four drillships of the so called Stena DrillMAX design and two super ferries, in addition to the new Suezmax tankers.  [05/02/10]
