Ulstein seeks more Filipino officers

Oslo: Senior Filipino officers specially screened and trained in the Ulstein Academy in Manila will be a key resource in Ulstein Marine Services' new move into the management of sophisticated ships including offshore support vessels, products and chemical carriers and gas ships. Deputy MD Jan Erik Granholdt explains that new offices are being established in Singapore, Dubai, Rotterdam, Rio de Janeiro and probably Houston in the weeks and months ahead. The company believes that significant cost savings and efficiency gains can be realised by transferring more management autonomy to vessels themselves whilst exercising close central management support from "mission control" in Oslo. The company aims to have about 100 ships under management within the next three years or so, some 20-30% of which will be sophisticated offshore support and construction vessels. The move comes at a good time, says COO Jens Lassen, because the owners of these types of vessels are currently assessing ways in which to trim costs and raise efficiency.  [12/03/09]
