Upbeat port figures from Los Angeles

Los Angeles: Containers shipped through the Port of Los Angeles in October increased 10.9% compared to September, marking the strongest month for the port this calendar year. Both containerized imports and exports reached their highest levels for 2009, with loaded outbound containers seeing an 11.8% rise over October 2008 volumes.  Nevertheless, loaded inbound containers were 8.3% below October 2008 levels.
The October figures were all the more impressive given that China had an eight-day national holiday at the beginning of the month. The total figure for the month was 647,423 teu, bringing the total for the first ten months to 5.607m teu, down 15.4% year-on-year.
It was last month that the US was officially declared out of recession. These figures from this key port back up the lightened economic mood in the US.  [17/11/09]
