Shanghai: Wärtsilä has extended its dual-fuel technology to the lower power range with the launch of the new environmentally advanced Wärtsilä 20DF engine, suitable for tugs, small cargo vessels, small ferries and barges. The new powerplant completes the company's range of DF engines, which can run on natural gas, marine diesel oil (MDO), heavy fuel oil (HFO) and bio fuels, thereby providing maximum flexibility in fuel choice.
Unveiling the 20DF launch at this week's Marintec China show in Shanghai, where Wärtsilä's Ship Power headquarters is based, company officials outlined their vision for widescale use of LNG as a fuel for ships in the 21st century. Wärtsilä has developed conceptual designs for various LNG-powered vessels - including integrated onboard systems for gas storage, processing and distribution - as well as for a fuel barge that would carry LNG supplies to ships.
The company points out that it has over 20 years' experience dealing with natural gas and more than 1,000 gas engines sold and in continuous operation. [02/12/09]
