With the challenges of running a global shipping business the last thing you might expect is BW Group chairman Andreas Sohmen-Pao would want do things the hard way in his spare time. But asked by Nigel Anton, Standard Chartered's managing director and head shipping finance, at Marine Money Asia to reveal something about himself the audience would not know Sohmen-Pao said that he roasts his own coffee.

Explaining this choice of hobby, he noted it made him sounded like a “real coffee nerd,” but that, “Actually it underpins this feeling I have, which is maybe a sign of getting older, that everything is becoming so easy in the modern world we are losing some of the joys of being alive.”

Sohmen-Pao noted that today you could make cup of coffee at the press of a button, and future probably without even pressing a button as it would be pre-programmed from an app.

“At some stage we will stop driving cars, they will drive us around. You don't need to put on a record or a CD in machine anymore to listen to music, you can have a playlist with every song in the world and just let it run. And it all becomes so easy where's the fun in that?

“So whether your thing is vinyl records, roasting your own coffee or driving a car that's challenging to drive, it's fun to find things are not done for you.”
