Yara Marine opens office in Shanghai on anticipated scrubber demand

Norway’s scrubber manufacturer Yara Marine Technologies has made its footprint in China with the opening of its new Shanghai office, responding to increasing demand for scrubbers in newbuilds and retrofit projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

The new Shanghai office will support a local team spanning the entire value chain from sales, engineering, procurement and service and commissioning, in addition to local support functions.

Michael Chang, general manager of Yara Marine Shanghai, said Asian shipyards and owners, like most clients, value close proximity and rapid service.

“As the 2020 deadline approaches, shipowners will require a very quick turnaround. We offer proven technology and installation insight. Short term and quick fix cheaper solutions in today’s market have tremendous operational and financial disadvantages in the long term,” Chang believed.

Chang pointed out that scrubbers are more than just an upfront investment.

“The payback period for Yara Marine high quality scrubbers, depending on time spent in Emission Control Areas is less than one to two years including installation cost. Some of our clients have saved between $2m to $3m of pure fuel costs per annum,” he said.

Peter Strandberg, ceo of Yara Marine, noted that a large percentage of scrubber installations will be executed in the Asia-Pacific region, hence a strong local presence in Shanghai is crucial.

Strandberg added that Yara Marine’s high quality, inline scrubbers of premium nickel alloy material come with an optional extended guarantee against corrosion – a major feature differentiating its scrubbers from market competition.

“A scrubber simply has to last the lifetime of the vessel. Replacing scrubbers is extremely expensive and not an option for our customers,” Strandberg stressed.

Yara Marine has delivered more than 100 scrubbers including open and closed loop or hybrid units.
