Hong Kong: Traditionally, today is the day to labour dear readers with lengthy replays and rehashes of the highs and lows of the year. In keeping with our commitment to be both Asian and concise, our year in review is now a year in haiku. Apologies for the severe lack of scanning capability - we are humble shipping scribes after all! Have a great 2008!
Rates shot up and down,
Shipping was a mainstream hit,
With shares smashing highs.
Container lines peaked,
Capes went for two hundred K,
While tankers seesawed.
Emissions were hot,
For once, bankruptcies were not,
Even with huge fuel fees.
Of pressing concern,
Officers numbered too few,
Leading to pay war.
Top port Singapore,
Shanghai outstripped old Hong Kong,
With Shenzhen close by.
Yard berths became scarce,
Newbuilds fetched top dollars,
As ships supersized.
But subprime fallout,
Excess vessels, surging oil,
Bode ill for '08.
