More than three days after the fatal fire started on the Shoei Kisen Kaisha vessel it is still too dangerous for salvors to board the vessel.
As of Thursday evening the Dutch Coastguard the fire was still raging on the car carrier with a lot of smoke although the intensity appeared to have decreased. It said it was still not safe to board the vessel.
On Friday morning the coastguard said there were no further developments and salvors and other parties involved in the recovery continued make plans for the salvage operations.
The ship continues to drift under the control of a tugboat.
On Thursday the Coastguard released aerial video that can viewed below showing the paint of the Fremantle Highway’s hull pealing and blistering from the heat, but with no cracks or holes having been observed at that time.
The Fremantle Highway chartered by K Line was enroute from Germany to Singapore when a fire erupted onboard in the late evening on 25 July off the coast of the Netherlands.
The crew attempted to extinguish the fire but failed in their attempt and all 23 were evacuated from the vessel, so jumping overboard. One seafarer died and several were injured as a result of the fire. The Dutch coastguard said it did not know how the seafarer had lost his life.
