Hosted by broadcaster Justin Webb, and attended by over 400 major industry figures, the winners were announced at a glittering ceremony at Guildhall in London. An independent judging panel of leading maritime industry figures chaired by IMO secretary general Koji Sekimizu decided on the winners of the competitive categories just hours before the awards ceremony.
The Safety at Sea award was awarded to the UK’s Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme (MPHRP), a charity offering assistance to victims of maritime piracy and their families. International Paint won the Clean Shipping Award for its fouling-release coating, Intersleek 1100SR. Denmark’s Svitzer A/S won the Investment in People award, for its Training and Angolanization programme in Soyo, Angola. The Innovation in Ship Operations award was presented to Subsea Industries for its Ecoshield rudder coating.
Receiving the Seatrade Lifetime Achievement Award was DNV GL president and ceo Dr Henrik Madsen. “I am extremely flattered and humbled to receive this prestigious award,” he said. “In 32 years with DNV I don’t think I’ve had a boring day."
Two of the world’s most prominent shipowners were also honoured. Seatrade’s Young Person in Shipping award was given to Scorpio Bulkers chairman, director and ceo Emanuele Lauro, accepted on his behalf by Roberto Giorgi, president of V.Ships. “Aged just 35, Mr Lauro has come a long way in a very short time in Monaco based Scorpio,” said Seatrade chairman, Chris Hayman.
Personality of the Year was awarded to Angeliki Frangou, chairman and ceo of Navios Maritime Holdings.
Presenting UASC ceo Jørn Hinge with the “Global Performer” award trophy, Seatrade global events director Vanessa Stephens praised the company’s upcoming range of 18,000 teu fuel-saving newbuilds as “the cutting edge of achieving operational efficiencies.”
Citing the $200m of estimated fuel savings provided per year by UASC’s existing 13,500 teu ecoships, Stephens said: “The [18,000 teu newbuilds] are not only among the largest container ships ever ordered, but are also believed to be the first for deepsea trades that have been specified as ‘LNG ready’.
“Indeed, this company has also committed to building its own LNG bunkering station in its home region of the Middle East.”
A collaboration between joint maritime industry project partners Shell, BP, Maersk, Stena and the Japanese shipping companies Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Mitsui OSK Lines and K Line was given the Seatrade Countering Piracy award, accepted by Grahaeme Henderson, vice president of Shipping & Maritime at Shell International Trading & Shipping Company.
The IMO’s themed award for World Maritime Day 2014, “IMO Conventions: Effective Implementation”, went to the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), with chairman Roberto Cazzulo accepting the award on the body’s behalf.
