Wartsila adds four new LNG carrier designs to gas offering
Wartsila has unveiled a series of four new LNG carrier ship designs with a focus on fuel efficiency.

The designs have been developed with customers under Wartsila's strategy of "Taking Merchant Shipping into the Gas Age". Fuel economy, flexibility and integration into the global LNG infrastructure were key design considerations, for both inland and ocean going operations.

As the names suggest, the WSD59 3K, WSD59 6.5K, WSD55 12K, and WSD50 20K range in capacity from a 3,000 cu m bunkering ship to a 20,000 cu m LNG tanker with lengths from 84.7 m to 147.25 m and drafts from 4.75 m to 6.2 m. The vessels were designed by Wartsila Ship Design teams in Poland and China and all use the latest duel-fuel engines to operate on LNG in ECA areas and MGO outside of them. While the capacity sizes of the design were not revealed the draught dimensions suggests these are small, coastal trading vessels. Queries to Wartsila were not answered at press time.

"Wärtsilä Ship Design has an extensive reference list dating back to 2003 for vessel designs for LNG-fueled ships. The experience and know-how that has been built up during these 15 years has been utilised to develop this latest series of world class designs for LNG carriers. The entire concept of these designs is to enable the lowest possible fuel consumption, to allow owners to select the ship design that exactly meets their needs, and to provide shipyards with the most convenient and cost effective packages possible," commented Riku-Pekka Hägg, vp, Ship Design, Wärtsilä Ship Power.
