The eight megamax ship-to-shore (STS) cranes will be supplied alongside 22 cantilever rail-mounted gantry cranes (CRMGs), governed by a Navis N4 terminal operating system.
The new equipment will be able to handle 1m teu every year – half of Liverpool2’s anticipated throughput - following the opening of the port in late 2015.
Peel Ports chief executive Mark Whitworth indicated that energy efficiency and emissions reduction was “integral to our investment”. The port is set to reduce road traffic by 100,000 trucks by 2020, according to company estimates.
“In addition, a key benefit of the enhanced operations when the facility is completed will be the significant increase in cargo capacity, which will also stimulate the economy of the North-west and further afield.”
