Value of maritime scholarships tops $1.7m

The Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) has updated that more than SGD2.3m ($1.7m) in maritime scholarships were awarded to 59 students at a MaritimeONE Scholarship Awards Ceremony held in Singapore on Thursday.

In terms of the number of MaritimeONE scholarships, there are a total of 42 scholars currently, with a total scholarship amount valued at over SGD1m, sponsored by 19 companies across all sectors including port, shipping, maritime services, shipyards as well as an institute of higher learning.

MaritimeONE scholars are able to choose from a spectrum of 34 degree courses across maritime and non-maritime subjects offered by local and overseas universities, as well as three maritime diploma programmes at the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA) in Singapore Polytechnic.

Since 2007, a total of 384 MaritimeONE scholarships worth more than SGD10m have been awarded to students to pursue courses locally and abroad.

The MaritimeONE Scholarship programme is spearheaded by the SMF as a key initiative to nurture talents for Singapore’s maritime sector.

In addition, a total of 17 Tripartite Maritime Scholarship (TMSS) scholarships valued at about SGD1.3m were also awarded at the ceremony.

The TMSS, introduced in 2002, aims to attract and encourage locals to take up a seafaring career to build a core group of local mariners.

TMSS is jointly sponsored by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), shipping companies, the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) and the Singapore Organisation of Seamen (SOS).
