Remote surveys by classification societies can both reduce costs and improve safety with human surveyors not required in difficult or dangerous to access areas.
ClassNK said the “Guidelines for remote surveys” covers carrying out surveys using ICT and requirements to apply remote surveys to some occasional surveys, and that it plans to implement remote surveys from now on where requirements are met.
“The Society aims to implement more sophisticated and rational surveys using various digital technologies such as IoT technology, ICT, big data, AI, condition monitoring/evaluation, and robotics,” ClassNK said.
“Specifically, they aim to develop remote surveys using ICT, ship survey systems for both hull and machinery based on condition monitoring/evaluation technology, and individual digital ship records using digital twins.”
The classification society said it would continue to optimise its surveys using digital technology.
