Neil Giles, Fleet Technical Manager at Petredec Holdings (Eastern) Pte Ltd, Singapore, was the ultimate winner with his stunning image: Dry Dock, Day 1.
His image was shot whilst dry docking the vessel in Keppel Shipyard, Singapore in early 2018.
He said: “The vessel had just docked the day before, the Hull had been washed and the anchor chains ranged. This was the first Hull and Chain inspection after the vessel was dry. My colleague (in the picture) was checking anchor chain for any loose studs or damaged links at the time the picture was taken. The photograph was taken on Day 1 to show the condition of the paintwork in the bow area, prior to any blasting and re-paint. As well as showing a general shot of the anchor chain condition.”
In 2nd Place was ‘Maria's Climb’ by Michelle Yong.
Michelle’s photo features Maria Dragoumerli, Naval Architect, from LOC, onboard the platform supply vessel ‘VOS Primrose’.
According to Michelle: “I wanted there to be a photo of a woman in shipping, taken by another, to bring attention to the women in the industry. Maria, pictured, is a naval architect. Significantly and uncannily, the name "Maria" could mean "Lady of the Sea", and also "Rebellion". Maria therefore represents us – the Women in Shipping, and my humble and peaceful rebellion to break gender stereotypes in the industry.”
3rd place winner is ‘We save lives!’ by Roel Ovinge.
He said: “We Save Lives! was taken last August 2018 from a North Sea beach in the Netherlands at dusk while the crew from KNRM (Royal Dutch Lifeboat Institution) Station Petten were on exercise practising handling ground swells with their Atlantic ILB “Dolfijn” (Dolphin).”
The judging panel from Seatrade, who had the tough job of selecting the winners, said that the entries had been exceptional.
According to Emma Howell, Head of Marketing at Seatrade: “This was the 2nd consecutive photo competition that we have held and the number of global entries has significantly increased. We were also slightly overwhelmed by the calibre of entries which made our lives harder to whittle down to finalists and then winners!”
The popular competition will soon open for 2019 entries and more details will be announced.
