French container line said the Egyptian authorities had confirmed their intention to enter into a long-term partnership with CMA CGM for the operation and management of Pier 55 at the Port of Alexandria during a trip to Egypt by CMA CGM chairman and ceo Rodolphe Saadé.

The terminal will cover an area of 560,000 sq m with over 2 km of quay, and an annual capacity of around 1.5m teu. Operation of the terminal is expected to start in 2022.

The new terminal will add to CMA CGM’s operations in the Med, which include Marseilles-Fos, Seville, Malta, Thessaloniki and Lattakia in Syria. Alexandria is located in a key region for the container line with CMA CGM vessels making more than 700 transits of the Suez Canal annually.

The line plans to deploy its new 15,000 teu LNG-powered vessels between Asia and the Mediterranean by the end of 2021.
