PSM TankView Simplifies Marine Tank Inventory Gauging

PSM Instrumentation has supplied a simple to use but highly functional inventory system solution to a major shipyard in Turkey. One of the instruments in PSM’s tank liquid level measurement and supervision systems range, the TankView ict 1000 hydrostatic level transmitter provides the required degree of accuracy whilst reducing the cost of the complete installation.

There are many inventory systems available for marine tank gauging, but most of these focus on the high-end of the market, where custody transfer or fiscal billing necessitate a highly complex and expensive system of radar level transmitters, temperature profiling probes and calculation software. In this case the shipyard sought a simplified option for its new build lubricating oil tanker and turned to PSM for assistance.

For this installation of 12 tanks, PSM specified a system based on its ict 1000 hydrostatic level transmitter, designed, constructed and approved for marine tank gauging applications. These were connected to the display and control unit using PSM RFM connection modules to form a Modbus communication loop. This digital architecture provided 0.1% measurement accuracy while at the same time reducing cable and installation complexity. These factors were important drivers in reducing installation and commissioning costs as well as ensuring build deadlines were met.

One level and one temperature transmitter were installed per tank, plus two additional level transmitters for heel and trim measurement to correct the tank level measurement for vessel orientation and draught.

A Windows PC running the PSM TankView software package provided the display and control unit. This was factory configured to suit the specific application by defining the geometry of the tanks as well as the density / temperature characteristics of the products via API tables. Each cargo type is available to the crew in a library of product choices, providing inventory readings in temperature corrected volume and mass units.

Additional PSM TankView features required were to freely assign low and high level alarm points on each tank, as well as provide historical records of cargo level movement using its integral data logging ability.

PSM Instrumentation is a specialist in advanced marine instrumentation, software systems and application solutions for marine architects, ship designers, ship builders and fleet owners. Fully compliant with the latest IEC and Marine Industry standards, TankView gauges provide reliable and accurate monitoring of liquid levels in the harsh environments of shipboard tanks, from military vessels to tankers.
