French firm Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and its subsidiary LD Seaplane has ordered three wind-assisted ro-ros from CSSC Wuchang Shipbuilding for use by Airbus.

The newbuilds equipped with a methanol-fuelled and wind-assisted propulsion system to reduce fuel consumption and emissions significantly.

The ro-ros will be able to transport about seventy 40-foot containers and six single-aisle aircraft components comparing with three to four components that current ro-ros can carry.

Upon delivery, the vessels will be deployed on Airbus aircraft transportation from Saint-Nazaire, France, to Mobile, Alabama in the US.

“The signing of the three ro-ro vessel contract is a milestone for Wuchang Shipbuilding making a breakthrough on the methanol-fuelled and wind-assisted ro-ro construction, and a step by the yard to broaden its product pool,” commented Wuchang Shipbuilding .

Wuchang Shipbuilding has already delivered eleven 13,000 dwt deck carriers for LDA, plus six newbuilds are currently under construction.
