Chile’s Puerto Coronel to invest $30m in expansion

Chile's third port terminal Puerto Coronel, located some 500km from Santiago, has announced it will invest $30m to strengthen its infrastructure and acquire two new container gantry cranes capable of serving Super Post-panamax vessels and the construction of associated infrastructure.

The 65m-23 row-cranes from China’s ZPMC will allow the terminal to increase the present average of 85 container movements per hour to about 120, and therefore reduce the time vessels spend at dock.

"The infrastructure we have today is sufficient for current and short-term demand. But we are committed to growing with a vision for the future and being prepared for the transformations in the shipping market, and the best prospects of foreign trade", said the company's ceo Javier Anwandter.

In 2017, the Port handled 6.97m tonnes, mainly from forestry and fishing products, which are the productive base of the south-central region. Forecasts for 2018 point at cargo volume increasing by 8% to 7.4m tonnes, positioning Puerto Coronel behind the terminals of the central zone of the country, San Antonio and Valparaiso.
